Our partners over at Kings of Clean had this interesting article about the different ways that keeping your gutters clean can save you money. While the entire list is worth reading, we thought we’d highlight a few items

Leaking Gutters:  Leaking gutters might seem like a minor inconvenience, but in many ways it is the primary issue that leads to many of the others. What’s more, if a leaking gutter isn’t addressed, it will worsen. The small leaks create crevices for water to slowly wear away at, expanding the opening and making the leak larger. If the temperature drops below freezing, this process is sped up because the freezing water expands, pushing the leaks wider.

Cracked Foundations: One of the more dramatic effects of a leaking gutter, foundation can crack due to water damage from improperly drained precipitation. Water pools next to your home, and either seeps into the foundation itself, or causes erosion of the soil beneath the foundation. Either way, the long term effect is incredibly expensive damage to the foundation, which you often won’t spot until it’s too late.

Leaking Roofs: If they don’t leak, clogged gutters can cause water to backup and pool on your roof instead. While this avoids some of the other issues, it can lead to long term expensive roof damage. Water seeps into the decking, and eventually can leak into your home itself. This can lead to other damages in a cascading effect which pushes repair bills exponentially higher.

Rotten Wood: This is the issue that can sneak up on you. As the water leaks down incorrectly from gutters, it can seep into the walls of your home. This causes mold and water damage to the wood interior, often hidden from view. Rotten wood may take a long time before you detect it, but once you do the damage can be extensive. Exterior wall repairs can be not only costly, but incredibly inconvenient as rooms may be unusable for a time. Further, insulation can be damaged at the same time, so your energy bills will increase before you’ve even noticed the repair issue.

Never forget, gutter issues can quickly grow into further problems. Staying on top of your gutter maintenance can be an important key to your success and peace of mind as a homeowner. Call us today to set up a plan to clean and repair any issues before they get worse.
